Derek Matthew Ziegler

Derek Matthew ZieglerMr. Derek Matthew Ziegler, age 27 of St. Marys, Ga. passed away in the early morning hours of Sunday, May 10th, 2015 at Baptist Health in Jacksonville, Fl.

Mr. Ziegler was born on October 28th, 1987 in Charleston, West Virginia. He is the son of Terry Edens & Mark Ziegler. Derek was dedicated to the Lord at the First Baptist Church in St. Albans. Derek grew up playing at the end of the street with the neighborhood kids in Cross Lanes & Hurricane, WV. He attended Scott Teays Elementary School and participated in T-ball, outdoor soccer, basketball, indoor soccer and baseball. Just before his 10th birthday he moved to St. Marys, Ga. with his family. He accepted the Lord as his Savior and was baptized at the First Baptist Church of Kingsland. He attended Mary Lee Clark Elementary School and then St, Marys Middle School, where he was a member of the football and basketball teams. He also participated in recreational league soccer, basketball and baseball.

He joined the AWANA Club with other friends at the First Baptist Church in St. Marys, where he later joined the church. In 2006, Derek graduated from Camden County High School, where he was a member of the 9th grade basketball team and earned four varsity letters in cross country, the first fellow in the school’s history to accomplish that feat. While in high school, he was active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He continued in the AWANA program and greatly enjoyed participating in the AWANA games and numerous mission trips. Derek attended Valdosta State University from 2006 to 2010, where he studied business administration, accounting and sports management. He was also active in intramural sports and sports program fan club. In 2010, he became a caddie at the TPC Sawgrass, where he enjoyed meeting a few celebrities and many business leaders. He was selected Caddie of the Year in 2014. He also continued running longer races, including several Gate River Runs and the Disney Marathon. He also was an enthusiastic fanatic for the Marshall University football team and University of Kentucky basketball team, attending games of both, whenever possible. On July 2nd, 2014, he was diagnosed with cancer of the esophagus and he battled tremendously. He finally beat cancer when he went home to be with the Lord on May 10th, 2015.

Mr. Ziegler is survived by his parents, Terry & Mark Ziegler; his sister, Kristen Ziegler all of St. Marys, Ga.; his grandparents, Don & Ruth Ziegler and Parmalee Edens, plus numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in passing by his grandfather, Rev. Clarence Edens.

Calling hours for the Ziegler family will be from 6 pm until on Wednesday, May 13th, 2015 at Coastal Camden Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Thursday May 14th, 2015 at St. Marys First Baptist Church with Pastor Steven Kegley presiding. Interment will be held in Oak Grove Cemetery in St. Marys, Ga.

Memorial contributions can be made in Mr. Ziegler’s honor to with the American Cancer Society/Esophageal Cancer Research.
