Elvida Thornton Rowell

Elvida Thornton RowellElvida Thornton Rowell, age 85 of St. Marys, passed into Heaven’s Gates in the early morning hours of Friday, December 5, 2014.

Mrs. Rowell was born March 10, 1929 in Ware County, Georgia. She was the fifth of six children to the late Albert & Macie Thornton.

As a teenager, she met a young man at the movie theatre in Fernandina Beach, Florida. At the encouragement of her girlfriends, she started dating him on December 24, 1947 and married Cecil Rowell in Brunswick in front of a Justice of the Peace They were happily married for 46 years before Cecil went to be with the Lord on October 23, 1993.

Their marriage would be doubly blessed with two sons, Daniel and Joseph, both of whom went to be with the Lord on December 30, 2012 and August 16, 2013 respectively.

Mrs. Rowell was a long time member of Calvary Baptist Church in St. Marys, which she loved dearly. She will be sadly missed by her Church family.

She will be laid to rest beside her husband, Cecil, and her two beloved sons, Daniel and Joseph at Corinth Cemetery in Folkston, Ga.

Mrs. Rowell leaves behind to remember her and cherish precious memories, her daughter- in- law, Mary J. Rowell of St. Marys; her grandchildren, Staci (Ken) Register, of Valdosta, Ga., Cara Lynn Rowell and Joshua Rowell, both of California; her great-grandchildren, Matthew Rivers, of St. Marys, Kaid, Kennedy, Kamden, and Karis Register, all of Valdosta, Tiffany Carson & Charles Carson of St. Marys; her sisters-in-law, Evelyn Thornton Crowell of Middleburg, Fl. and Ruth Thornton Burkhart of Fernandina Beach, Fl.; many loving nieces and nephews (great & great- great), and loving friends who adored her.

Mrs. Rowell will be missed greatly by her family and friends.

The family would like to give a special thank you to Mrs. Rowell’s nephew, Robert Thornton, Jr, whom she asked to be her primary care-giver when her son, Joseph passed. She would often tell others, “I don’t know how I would get by without Bobby”. Because of his love and selflessness, Mrs. Rowell was allowed to stay in her home of 42 years as she requested.

The family would also like to give many thanks to Hospice of the Golden Isles and in particular, Richard. During the short time that Robert and his family knew him, they were very blessed. His compassion guidance and advice made all the difference in the world and truly “lightened the load when Mrs. Rowell left this world”. Thank you Richard!
