Mrs. Miyako Goto Hewitt, age 80 of the Boone Street community in Kingsland, Ga. passed away unexpectedly Friday, August 29, 2014 at her residence.
Mrs. Hewitt was born on July 7, 1934 in Oita City, Japan and is the daughter of the late Mirako & Iyako Goto. She is the oldest of four children. As was custom, Miyako’s parents had an arranged marriage planned, but when she was 18 she met a US Army paratrooper that quite literally dropped into her life. She rebelled against her parents’ wishes and instead married Mr. Walter Clifford Hewitt. Shortly thereafter, she came to the United States with her new husband. She spoke little English, so Mr. Hewitt moved her to the country to have his family teach her the southern dialect, plus how to make fried chicken and homemade biscuits. Miyako fast became an A+ student.
Miyako and Mr. Hewitt raised three daughters and a son together. They moved their family to Kingsland in 1963 and she lived in the same house until she went to be with the Lord Friday. Miyako had many interests and hobbies. Outdoors, she enjoyed fishing, working in her flower garden & tending the koi pond. She loved to travel and was able to by flying TWA (Teenie Weenie Airlines).
Her inside interests included origami, making jewelry, and watching TV, especially cooking shows, where she often treated her family to a new recipe. She was a wonderful cook and could have hosted her own TV cooking show. She loved tending her fish aquariums and her beloved dog for 12 years named Missy. Her greatest love of all though was for that of her family. She was a homemaker all of her life and “at home” was how all were made to feel when they visited. Her children, grandchildren & great grandchildren speak of her with such love and admiration and shared that she was an independent, strong willed woman of great strength and courage.
Mrs. Hewitt is survived by her children and their spouses, Peggy & William Lord of Johns Island, SC., Shirley & Sam Kaufman of Wildwood, FL., and Clifford & Donna Hewitt; her brothers, Asami & Surami Goto, and sister, Fimiko Goto, her son in law, Larry Davis, Sr. of Kingsland, GA. her grandchildren, Larry, Jr., Bobby & Jonathan Davis, Michele & BW Lord and Walker Edwards; and her great grandchildren, Cheyenne, Weston, Hayden, Astoria & Kayla.
Along with her parents and husband, Mrs. Hewitt also joins her daughter, Mary Davis in Heaven.
A visitation will be held from 1 to 2 pm Tuesday, September 2, 2014 with funeral services following at Coastal Camden Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in St. Marys, GA.
