Joseph Labron Taylor, Sr.

Joseph Labron Taylor, Sr.Joseph Labron Taylor, Sr.– Jesus swung down his sweet chariot and took Joe to his heavenly mansion on March 27, 2014. He was 68 years old. Joe was born to Joseph B. and Mary F. Taylor in Lakeland, Fl. on December 16, 1945.

Along with his parents, Mr. Taylor was preceded in passing by his maternal grandparents, Worth and Minnie Taylor, of Lakeland, Fl.; and his paternal grandparents, Joseph B., Jr. and Rosetta Taylor, of Jacksonville, Fl.

He grew up in Jacksonville, Fl. and attended Ruth N. Upson Elementary School, John Gorrie Junior High School, and graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1963. Joe married the girl across the street from his house, Alice Ruth Luckie, on August 21, 1965 at North Main Street Baptist Church. He received his draft notice in December of 1965, but joined the Navy Reserves.

After his tour of duty on the USS Koelsch, a destroyer escort, he moved his family to St. Marys, GA in February of 1969 to work as an electrician at the Gilman Paper Mill.

In May of 1969 Joe had his first benign meningioma brain tumor removed. August of 1994 he had a very large benign meningioma brain tumor removed. February of 2005 he had the third benign tumor removed. August of 2011 he had the fourth tumor removed and it was diagnosed as cancerous. December 10, 2013 the fifth cancerous tumor was diagnosed as inoperable and untreatable.

He is survived by his wife, Alice Taylor; his children, Joe, Jr. and his wife, Sherry, of Waverly, GA, Teresa Robertson and her husband, James, of Oxford, GA, and Tracy Riggins and her husband, Stacy, of St. Marys, GA; his seven grandchildren, David Taylor and his wife, Pamela, of Jeffersonville, IN; Johnathan Taylor, of Clarksville, IN; Patrick Taylor, of Waverly, GA; Andrew and Stewart Robertson, of Oxford, GA; Chelsey and Christy Riggins, of St. Marys, GA; and his two great-granddaughters, Olivia and Julia Taylor of Jeffersonville, IN.

Other survivors include his sister, Carolyn Pires and nephew, Brandon Pires, of Jacksonville, Fl.; his aunt, Wyolene Bivins, of Waycross, GA; sister-in-laws, Sandra Perdue and her husband, Jerry, of Bryceville, Fl.; Robin Culpepper and her husband, Bob, of Jacksonville, Fl.: his niece, Jennifer Baer and her husband, Steve, of Casselberry, Fl.; his nephew, Jerry Perdue, II and his wife, Tricsi, of Misawa-shi, Aomori, Japan; his nephew, Charles Mann, of Jacksonville, FL; his great-nieces, Christa Baer, of Highlands, NC and Alexis Baer of Casselberry, Fl.; his great-nephew, Dawson Baer, of Casselberry, Fl.; and all of Joe’s cousins and friends will miss him greatly.

There will not be a viewing and visitation. A Graveside service, with military honors, will be held at Oak Grove Cemetery in St. Marys, GA at 2 PM on Monday, March 31, 2014 with Reverend Bob Hughes and Reverend Gregg Gardell officiating. Pallbearers will be Jack Bazemore, Warren Beagle, Ken Gay, Bobby Mitchell, J C Outlaw, and Terry Shaw. Honorary Pallbearers will be men of the electrical shop of Gilman Paper Mill.
