JL Crews

JL CrewsMr. JL Crews, age 73 of Hortense, Ga. passed away at Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville, Fl., on Sunday afternoon June 2nd, 2013.

Mr. Crews was born on October 18th, 1939, in Hortense, Ga. He is the son of the late Rufus Franklin and Mary Saloney Jacobs Crews. JL spent most of his life in Camden County. He met the love of his life, Yvonnie Chewning Crews, at age 18 and married her after 24 days. They spent 54 years together. JL worked for Milton Readdick for many years, and he retired from the city of St. Marys at age 62 before moving to Hortense. He was a jack-of-all-trades who enjoyed numerous hobbies including fishing, golf, driving four-wheelers, treasure hunting, and playing games with family. His favorite game was Mexican Rummy which spawned numerous phrases in the Crews household including, “I hate this game,” and, “You can’t beat luck.” He accepted Jesus as his savior and was saved on March 6, 1988. He was a member of several churches throughout his life including Folkston Church of God, Boulogne Church of God/Holiness Church, and Hortense Holiness Church. In 2006, he won the gold medal for softball throw in the Senior Olympics in Douglas, Ga.

Mr. Crews is survived by his beloved wife, Yvonnie L. Crews; his daughters, Wanda Brown of Hortense, Jenny Weaver of St. Marys, Cindy Floyd and her husband Donnie of Blackshear, Mary Aldridge and her husband Ricky of Browntown, and Shirleen Wilson and her husband Brandt of St. Augustine, Fl.; his sister, Murialdean Miller of Callahan, Fl.; his brother, Julian Crews of St. Marys; grandchildren, Raquel Smith and her husband Chris, Angela Brannen and her husband Adam, Rachel Hernandez and her husband Dereck, Shanna Floyd, Jacob Floyd, Ashley Wynn and her husband Skyler, Eric Floyd, Brittany Eatman and her husband Doug, Erin Wilson and Rebekka Wilson; his 9 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Mr. Crews was preceded in passing by his sisters, Della Lane and her husband JW, Geneva Lane and her husband Vernon, and Daisy Crews; his brothers, Cauley Crews and his wife Sallie, Samuel D. Crews, JC Crews and Mason Crews; his brother-in-law, Clarence Miller; and his son-in-law, Randy Brown.

Calling hours for Mr. Crews will be from 6 to 8 pm Wednesday, June 5th, 2013, at Coastal Camden Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held starting at 11 am Thursday, June 6th, 2013, at St. Marys First Baptist Church on W. Weed Street with Pastor Sammy Spradley of Hortense Holiness Church presiding. Pallbearers will be Mike Weaver, Richard Barnard, Scott Wilcox, Bucky Robertson, Alan Carper, and Chris Smith.

Interment and committal prayers will follow the service at Oak Grove Cemetery in St. Marys, Ga.
