Mr. Donald W. Aldridge, Sr. age 80 of Bound Street in Saint Marys passed away on the early morning of Saturday October 27th, 2012 at Southeast Georgia Health System’s Brunswick Campus.
Mr. Aldridge was born in Blackshear, Ga. on November 27th, 1931. He is the son of the late Bennie Archie and Mary Elizabeth Pittman Aldridge. Mr. Aldridge was a Korean War veteran, having joined the US Army after leaving his family’s farm in Pierce County, Georgia. In 1950, Mr. Aldridge was stationed in Japan as part of the occupation forces, when South Korea was invaded by the North Korean Communist. He served in Korea and was awarded his Combat Infantryman’s Badge, the Korean Service medal with two Bronze Stars, the United Nations Service Medal with two overseas bars, and the National Defense Service Medal. Returning from the war, he was honorably discharged in October of 1953. Afterwards, he learned his lifelong trade as a pipefitter in the paper industry, which he brought to Gilman Paper Company in the 1950s. In St. Marys, he found the love of his life, Carol Yvonne Horne, and they have enjoyed 56 years of marriage together. Mr. Aldridge will be greatly missed by both his family and friends.
Mr. Aldridge is survived by his beloved wife, Carol Yvonne Aldridge; his son, Donald W. Aldridge, Jr. and wife Kim of Folkston; his son, Joel Bennett Aldridge and wife Amy of Pennington Gap, Va.; his daughter, Nina Roney and husband Bryan of Helena, Al.; his sister, Irvaleen Butler and husband Jerry of Eatonton, Ga.; his brothers Angus Aldridge of Eatonton, Ga., Dalton Aldridge and wife Barbara of Illinois, and Charles Aldridge and wife Cindy of Atkinson, Ga. and his 11 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and a large number of nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Mr. Aldridge is preceded in passing by his sister, Armojean Fullard and his brothers Latchelon and Walsteen Aldridge.
A visitation will begin at 10 am, Monday October 29th, 2012, with funeral services to follow at 11 am at Westside Baptist Church, 201 South Dandy Street in St. Marys with Pastor David Forro presiding. Pallbearers will be Chuck Aldridge, Jim Fullard, Wayne Butler, Mike Aldridge, Dennis Aldridge and Noah Aldridge. Honorary pallbearers will be John David Rose, Galen Franklin and Blaise Roney. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery in St. Marys.
