Mr. Wilbur Horace Sheffield, age 89 of Brunswick, Ga. passed away peacefully Tuesday evening, October 16th, 2012 at Southeast Georgia Health Systems Brunswick Campus.
Mr. Sheffield was born on October 28th, 1922 in Kingsland, Ga. He is the son of the late Sherard Cook and Shirley Peeples Sheffield. Mr. Sheffield was a WWII veteran serving in the US Army Air Corps as a bomber pilot from 1944- 1945. He was later called up in 1950 for the Korean War with the newly formed US Air Force. He flew F-80 Shooting Star Jet Fighters. He was shot down over Korea and held captive before escaping. He was honorably discharged in 1952, after convalescing from the many ailments associated with his crash and capture.
Along with his brothers Carl and Arnold, he is named in the National War Memorial in Washington, DC. After his war service, Mr. Sheffield homesteaded and became a commercial fisherman in Alaska. He later became a businessman/entrepreneur. Mr. Sheffield lost his first wife, Mrs. Louise McElroy Sheffield, on January 14th, 1999. Later, Mr. Sheffield married Miss Nancy I. Spradley in Folkston on March 23rd, 2001 and they have shared over 11 years of life and love together. Mrs. Sheffield said of him,” Wilber was a wonderful man and husband. He loved fishing, traveling in RV’s and gardening. He tried to treat everyone with respect and love”. Both Wilber and Nancy are members of the Bay Harbor Church of God in Brunswick, Ga. He loved his wife, children and was loved very much by all who knew him. He will be sadly missed.
Mr. Sheffield leaves behind his loving and devoted wife, Nancy I. Sheffield; his children, Rita Richardson and her husband Jack on St. Simons Island, Tommy Hull and his wife Tonia, Steve Hull, Nelda White, Beverly Cleveland and her husband John, Donna Case and her husband Jessie, all of Brunswick, and Tracie S. Spruill in Jacksonville, FL.; his siblings, Arnold and his Wife Gloria in Harriett’s Bluff and Joanne Watson in Jacksonville, FL.; and his numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents and his first wife, Mr. Sheffield was preceded in passing by his children Linda Cox and Rodney W. Sheffield, his sister Ida west and his brother Carl Sheffield.
Viewing hours for Mr. Sheffield will be from 6 to 8 PM Friday, October 19th, 2012 at The Bay Harbor Church of God in Brunswick.
Funeral services will be held graveside at 11 am, Saturday, October 20th, 2012 at Sheffield Cemetery in Kingsland with Brother Ricky Harris presiding.
The family requests in lieu of flowers that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society or Hospice of the Golden Isles in his memory.
