Willie Ruth HinsonWillie Ruth Hinson, 88, a longtime resident of Marianna, Florida passed away Monday July 16, 2012 at Hospice of Golden Isle in Brunswick, Georgia, following a brief illness. Her family will greet friends and relatives from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Friday, July 20 in the fellowship hall of the First Presbyterian Church, 2898 Jefferson Street, in Marianna. A memorial service celebrating the life of Ruth Hinson will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church.

Ruth was born February 17, 1924 in Graceville, the third and baby daughter of Alfred B. and Ida B. Barfield. Following graduation from Graceville High School, she moved to Tallahassee where she graduated from Florida State College for Women, which later became FSU with a B.S. Degree in Business Education and English Studies. During World War II, she worked at Wainwright Shipyard in Panama City where she met and later married the “love of her life” Willie Green Hinson. Willie preceded here in death on August 8, 2000 and was buried on their 54th wedding anniversary.

She was a teacher at Marianna High School for 38 years, teaching many different subjects, but her favorites were keyboarding and accounting. Throughout the years, students would contact here to tell her how much they had used computer keyboarding and bookkeeping skills. Over the years, she enjoyed working with students on many events including homecoming floats, ordering class rings and Junior Review.

Ruth was a longtime member and elder of the First Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years. She was also a member of Pilot Club, Retired Teachers Organization, and a cancer survivor; she was the first volunteer for the American Cancer Society that went to hospitals to speak with breast cancer patients following their surgery. She was a regular member of the Thursday Night Canasta Club that met weekly for over 40 years.

Ruth loved her family and demonstrated her love for others through her daily interaction with others. She is survived by two daughters and son-in-laws: Sandy (Bill) Hinson of Panama City, Florida and Jo Beth (Greg) Bird of St. Marys, Georgia; Grandkids, Brandon (Kara) Bird of Jacksonville, Fl., Joshua Hinson of Panama City, Charlsie (Hamilton) McElroy of St. Marys and Jessica (Justin) Ayers of Panama City. She had 3 great-grandgirls, Mercedes McElroy (9), Cayden McElroy (7) and Marianna Bird (almost 2)
