Mildred Irene Wingate Balkcom

Mildred Irene Wingate BalkcomMrs. Mildred Irene Wingate Balkcom of Kingsland, GA passed away on June 21, 2012 in Kingsland at the age of 99. She succumbed to lung cancer.

Mrs. Balkcom was born in Dunnellon, FL on February 19, 1913, and was the first of seven children to parents Levis L. Wingate and Bessie I. Carleton. She graduated from Okeechobee High School in Florida in 1930. She later married Dewey W. Balkcom in 1933. Dewey passed away in 1977 and she never remarried. Mrs. Balkcom raised two sons and helped put them through college. She worked for several years in the payroll office of Gilman Paper Company in St. Mary’s, GA.

Mrs. Balkcom was an active, productive volunteer throughout her life. She was the organizing Regent of the Earl of Camden Chapter of The Daughters of the American Revolution in 1967. She was a member and leader in The Woman’s Club of St. Mary’s, The Eastern Star, and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served as a Temple Worker in the Washington, D.C. Temple and also in the Oakland, CA Temple of her church. She also served a proselyting mission for eighteen months in the San Antonio, TX area. In the 1980’s, she organized a group of volunteers in Orangevale, CA to fabricate items, such as leprosy bandages and stuffed toys for humanitarian purposes for hospitalized children. She loved cooking, baking and playing cards. She had a quiet and kind personality with a great sense of humor. She made friends easily and was well-liked by all who knew her. Her best friends were Julia Watson of Kingsland and Betty Bacon, Marjorie Porter and Lois Barnes (also known as “The Lemmings”) of Orangevale, CA.

Mrs. Balkcom is survived by her two sons, Brian Balkcom (married to Anita Killary) and Tim Balkcom (married to Audrey Keszler); her brothers, Rodney and Robert Wingate; her grandchildren, David Balkcom, Britt Balkcom, Holli (married to Jason) Roberts, Alisa Johannsen and Erica (married to Rich) Chiniquy; her 16 great grandchildren, and her two great- great grandchildren.

A visitation will be held at 10 AM, Saturday June 30th, 2012 in the Kingsland congregation of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints with the funeral service to follow there at 11 AM with President Kevin Washington presiding. Interment will be at the Carleton-Haddock Cemetery located just off Scrubby Bluff Road near Exit #1 of Interstate 95 in Kingsland.
