James Arlington Barnard, Jr.Mr. James Arlington Barnard, Jr., age 81 of West Laura Street in St. Marys, Ga. passed away at his residence, Sunday, June 3rd, 2012.

Mr. Barnard was born in Waycross, Ga. on December 4th, 1930. He is the son of the late Joseph Arlington and Delilah Melinda Anderson Barnard. Mr. Barnard was known as Jake by most of his friends. In his younger days, he loved to hunt and fish on the Satilla River, where he built a small cabin. He later joined the US Army in August of 1952 and served overseas during the Korean Conflict. He earned the Korean Service Medal with 1 Bronze Service Star, The UN Service Medal and the National Defense Medal. He left the service in May, 1954. Mr. Barnard married Ruby Ellen Martin on September 3, 1954 in Camden County and they shared over nine years together until her untimely passing in October of 1963. He later was wed to Ardeth Thrift in 1966. She had four children who Mr. Barnard adopted and became proud father to. Mr. Barnard was a Millwright and bulldozer operator at Gilman Paper Company with 42 years of service. He was a brother in the Masonic Lodge No. 109 in St. Marys and was of the Primitive Baptist faith.

Mr. Barnard is survived by his daughters, Diane and Dale Lyons of Nahunta, and Betty and Ray Strickland of Cumberland Island; his sons, Clifford and Darlene Thrift of St. Marys, James A. and Traci Barnard, III of Woodbine, Charles and Sherry Barnard of Atkinson, Richard and Cheryl Barnard of Kingsland, and Glenn Barnard of St. Marys; his sisters, Sue and David Hickox of Nahunta, and Margaret Parker of Folkston; His brothers, Lester Barnard of Waycross and Freddie Barnard of Nahunta; His sister in law, Doris Barnard of Nahunta; his grandchildren, Charlie, Crystal and Glenn Barnard, Raqel Smith, Rachel Hernandez, Ashley Wynn, Amber Stark, Will Kemp, Kerry, Liza and Kate Lyons, David and Casey Strickland, David Carswell, Missy Loper, Leslie Lindsey and Lisa Sikes; and several great grandchildren.

Besides his parents and his wife, Mr. Barnard was preceded in passing by his brothers, Foster and Ralph Barnard.

Calling hours for Mr. Barnard will be held from 6 to 8 PM Wednesday, June 6th, 2012 in the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM, Thursday, June 7th, 2012 in the Wainwright Chapel in the funeral home with Elder Terry Barnard and Rev. Marcel Myers presiding. Interment will follow in Little Phoebe Cemetery in Folkston with both military and Masonic honors to be rendered there.

    I knew brother Jake through our membership in the Primitive Baptist Church. He and my daddy used to love to talk bible “his name was James Kick lighter” so sorry to hear of his passing.
