Mr. David Lee Vanzant, 85 of St. Marys passed away at his residence Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011.
Mr. Vanzant was born in Kings Ferry, Florida on September 18th, 1925. He is the son of the late Tiny Oscar and Nora Haddock Vanzant. Mr. Vanzant was married for 57 years to a wonderful, loving wife, Arlene Etta Miller Vanzant. Mr. Vanzant lived near Crooked River State Park. He enjoyed sitting at the boat ramp watching the boats pull in and out of the river, but he especially liked when he was in his own boat catching fish. He was a member of numerous hunting clubs in Georgia and Florida. Mr. Vanzant was a faithful employee of Gilman Paper Company with over 47 years of service, working on # 3 paper machine as a refining operator. Many people knew him as the “Strawberry Man”. He sold strawberries in the parking lot at Navy Federal Credit Union for many years and also delivered them to the various schools in Camden County. After Mr. Vanzant retired, he made sure he got up early, so he didn’t miss breakfast at Hardee’s with his friends. Mr. Vanzant was of the Baptist faith and will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
Mr. Vanzant is survived by his children, Charlotte (Rickey) Sirmon of Nahunta, Sue (John) Roberts of Kingsland and Donnie (Marian) Vanzant of White Oak,; his sister, Eula Douglas of Kingsland and his grandchildren, Buck and Darrell Vanzant, Melissa Partin, Denise Raybon, John and Brett Roberts, Michael and Matthew Perry, Mark Johns and Timothy, Tyler and Davannah Sirmon and his 8 great grandchildren. Besides his parents, Mr. Vanzant was preceded in passing by his wife, Arlene E. Vanzant, his daughter, Panzy Perry, his brother, Oscar Vanzant and his grandson, James Sirmon, IV.
Calling hours are from 5 to 8 pm Saturday, February, 26th, 2011 at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be at 2 pm Sunday, February 27th, 2011 at Ruhamah Baptist Church in Kingsland with Reverend Bob Hughs and Pastor Doug Harris of Ruhamah Baptist Church presiding. Active pallbearers are Tony Linker, Joe Bradford, Kevin Barber, Martin Lents, Brett Prince and Craig Smith. Honorary pall bearers will be Jimmy Brown, Lamar Cloud, Roy Combs, Harold Smith, Dinkey Harvey, Don Drury, Joe Fields, Carl Waye, Leslie Linker, Tommy King, Dr. Willis Keene, Tommy Woods, Charles Brazell and Carl Stoeffler. The committal service will follow in Temple Creek Cemetery.
