Josephine Gooding Briese

Josephine Gooding Briese Mrs. Josephine E. Briese, 78 of Woodbine, Ga. passed away on the afternoon of April 20th, 2010 at the Southeast Georgia Health System’s Brunswick campus.

Mrs. Briese was born in Jacksonville on November 23rd, 1931. She is the daughter of the late John Morgan Gooding, Sr. and Georgia Mae Borland Gooding and is a life long resident of Woodbine. Mrs. Briese was a very accomplished woman. She was the Valedictorian of her high school graduating class. To earn her way through college, she drove tractor trailer trucks for the family business. On August 11th, 1952, she married Robert “Windy” Briese, in Kingsland. She loved traveling as an Airforce wife. At one point during her travels with Windy, she taught herself to ice skate, borrowing his ice skates while he was gone to work. Always eager to learn, she was the first woman to complete the Georgia Fire Academy and later served as a Lieutenant in the Woodbine Volunteer Fire Department. Her desire to serve community and others led her to teach Georgia History in Camden County for 30 years, as well as, serve as a Boy Scout and Girl Scout leader. She also participated in the Fresh Air Children’s Society. She was an avid photographer. Her sense of adventure led her to drive an Indian Chief motorcycle and fly in a 1929 Standard Bi-wing open cockpit airplane. Mrs. Briese lived life to the fullest. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Mrs. Briese is survived by her beloved husband, Robert “Windy” Briese of Woodbine; her espoused children, Cynthia Mae (Shane) Kennedy and Lannie Eugene (Janice) Brant both of White Oak, plus several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Mrs. Briese was also preceded in death by her brother, John “Johnny-Boy” M. Gooding, Jr.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 PM, Thursday, April 22nd, 2010 at the funeral home.

Funeral services will begin at 11 AM, Friday, April 23rd, 2010 in the Woodbine United Methodist Church with Firefighter’s Honor Guard and Renderings bestowed. Reverend T. Jack McCollough and Pastor Don Wolfgang will preside.

Casket bearers will be Garry Briese, Shawn Briese, Jim Proctor, Julian Proctor, Robbie Brant, Keith Kelley. Honorary pallbearers will be Jeff Brannen, Buddy Kelly, Clarence Mitchell, Willis Keene, Louis Keene, Wesley Blake, Ralph Pearce, Peter Baker, Hazel Kelley, Ann Williams, Archie Wise, Bernie Bichel, Dwanda Parrott, Jim Godley, Jerry Lloyd, Ed Cooler, Daniel Simpson, Mike VanHorn, Al Pearson, Brenda Wainwright.

Interment committal will follow at Homeward Cemetery in Waverly, Ga.
