Lester Crews

Lester CrewsMr. Lester Crews, 85 of St. Marys, Georgia passed away at his residence, after a lengthy illness, late Saturday night May 10th, 2008 surrounded by his beloved family.

Mr. Crews is a native of Charlton County, Georgia. He was born in Winokur on March 16th, 1923 to the lates Willie Darlin and Bessie Hale Crews. At the age of 17, Mr. Crews enlisted in the US Army. He served his country during WWII for six years and was a member of the US Army Air Corp’s 8th Air Force. While stationed in England, he met his bride, Joan Freeman and they were wed January 31st, 1943.Mr. Crews was a member of Westside Baptist Church. He loved to see all of his grandchildren; he loved to work in his garden and then give the fruits and vegetables away to his family and friends.

Mr. Crews is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Joan F. Crews of St. Marys; his daughters Marion C. Vanzant (Donnie) of White Oak and Carol C. Madsen (Chuck) of Atlanta; his sister Dorothy Forbes of St. Simons Island; 9 grandchildren (8 grandsons and his only granddaughter, Melissa Vanzant Partin), 18 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his only son, David L. Crews, Sr. and his sister Daisy Crews.

A visitation was held from 6 until 8 PM Monday, May 12th, 2008 at the funeral home.

A funeral service was held at 3 PM Tuesday at Edo Miller Funeral Home Camden Chapel with Pastor David Forro presiding. Casket bearers were his grandsons, David L. Crews, Jr., Greg Crews, Clay Madsen, Paul Madsen, Brian Madsen, Brett Madsen, Buck Vanzant and Darrell Vanzant. Interment followed in Oak Grove Cemetery in St. Marys.
